Safety instructions Working in the vicinity of a lead-acid battery is dangerous because it generates explosive gases during normal operation. To reduce the risk of battery explosion and personal harm, always follow these safety instructions and precautions: 1. Read all operating and safety instructions carefully before using the Quick Battery Test unit. 2. Wear eye protection and use caution when working around batteries. 3. Don’t smoke, strike a match or cause a spark in the vicinity of the battery. 4. Keep hair, hands and clothing as well as analyzer cords and cables away from moving engine parts. 5. Inspect the battery for damages. 6. Check the electrolyte level. If it’s too low, replenish the electrolyte and charge the battery fully. Follow instructions published by battery manufacturer and manufacturers of any equipment you intend to use in the vicinity of a battery. Also review cautionary markings on products and engine. Battery testing 1. Make sure engine is off. 2. Remove the black negative (- NEG) probe from the tester (Fig. 1). 3. Touch the red positive (+ POS) probe to the positive (+) battery post. 4. Then touch the black negative (- NEG) probe to the neglative (-) battery post. 5. Appropriate battery LED will indicate battery’s state of charge (100%, 75%, 50% or 25%). Quick-disconnect battery testing Insert test probes directly into two-pin quick disconnect with red positive (+ POS) probe in the female side of the connector. For more in-depth battery testing: 1. Switch headlights on for a short period (approximately 1-2 minutes). 2. Then switch headlights off and disconnect battery from vehicle. 3. Wait 10 minutes. 4. Connect tester to battery. 5. Follow instructions above. Alternator testing 1. With battery connected, start engine. 2. Remove the black negative (- NEG) probe from the tester (Fig. 1). 3. Touch the red positive (+ POS) probe to the positive (+) battery post. 4. Then touch the black negative (- NEG) probe to the negative (-) battery post. 5. Alternator LED will indicate alternator condition (BAD or GOOD). Bad alternator light indicates alternator is overcharging. No alternator light designates it is undercharging. Always replace the black negative (- NEG) probe in tester after use.
